Second “Smart Things for Active and Assisted Living (ST4AAL)” Special Session

Motivation of the Track:

Rapidly growing elderly population and declining workforce in developed countries, due to increased life expectancy and decreased birth rates, bring new challenges, as, with ageing, the probability of people developing physical and cognitive impairments increases. A strong need for new and more effective technologies and services to provide support and care, and to prolong independent living with acceptable Quality of Life, emerges. At the same time, new and emerging technologies may provide the tools to face the aforementioned challenges, like personalized care, quantified self, and lifelogging, based on the pervasive use of wearable devices. As in the first edition in 2016, this Special Session will focus on Smart Things for Active and Assisted Living, a domain that embraces both physical (wearable devices, smart objects of daily living) and virtual things (monitoring applications running on mobile devices, smart environments), designed according to a user-centred approach, for which several technological issues have to be tackled, such as sensing and communications capabilities, power supply, data security and reliability, but also other issues such as usability , acceptability, and willingness-to-use. The Special Session will welcome contributions from researchers and experts in the aforementioned areas, but also from professionals and practitioners, to provide an up-to-date view of the current research in the domain of Smart Things for AAL, availability of such Smart Things in the market, and future perspectives of this rapidly growing field.
